Spain Planning on Stopping Catalonian Indepedence bid

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says he's ready to halt any secession attempt for the northeastern Catalonia region if regional elections in September generate a majority of independence-minded lawmakers trying to push the issue forward.

Rajoy made the comments Tuesday as several Catalan parties prepare their lists of pro-secession candidates for the Sept. 27 election for the Catalan regional parliament.

The region's Convergence and the Republican Left parties see the election as a vote on independence and say they will unilaterally push for Catalonia to leave Spain if they obtain a majority of seats in the regional parliament.

Rajoy has said an independence declaration by Catalonia would be unconstitutional.
